CONNOR MCDAVID, 16, IMPRESSIVE AGAINST NHLERS
The first thing you realize is just how well Connor McDavid fits in.
He is just 16, going into his second year with the OHL Erie Otters, but working out and skating with NHLers this week at Gary Roberts’ Biosteel camp at St. Michael’s College, McDavid looked like he belonged.
“He scored a pretty nice goal against us,” said Joel Ward of the Washington Capitals. “His skill set is unbelievable. It was cool to see him.
“You can tell (why) he’s a highly-touted player.”
Of course, playing with much older players is nothing new to McDavid. He made the OHL at 15 against players as old as 20.
“Playing against guys who are five years older than you takes a toll on your body,” said McDavid. “This summer I (needed to) get bigger, get faster. I think I’ve done that.”
McDavid — all five-foot-11, 175 pounds of him — has worked out with Roberts for two summers now. Roberts, of course, is the former Leaf who has made a post-hockey career as a highly-sought fitness trainer and nutrition expert. He has an A-list of NHLers including Steve Stamkos.
“Training, it’s so important,” said McDavid, a Newmarket native. “Before you’d go to training camp to get in shape. Now it’s completely different. All summer is just used to (train to) go to training camp to make the team. These guys are at their peak this summer. They’ve never been bigger, they’ve never been faster.”
